Art Prints in Verona: Editions, Signatures and Prices

La città dell'amore dove il romanticismo incontra la pietra rosata

Art prints in Verona: what you are actually buying

An art print is a work made to exist in more than one copy. The number of copies is fixed beforehand, each one is signed, and once the edition is sold out no more are printed: that, not the quality of the paper, is what separates it from a reproduction.

The techniques, briefly

  • Etching and lithography: printed from a plate or stone, often by hand; the run is also limited by the wear on the matrix.
  • Screen printing: colour laid down layer by layer through a mesh; flat, saturated tones.
  • Pigment printing (giclée): digital printing with pigment inks; today the most common technique for photography and digitally made work.

How to read an edition

"12/25" means copy twelve of 25. Artist's proofs, marked A.P., are normally outside the numbering and few. Signature and number are usually in pencil in the margin; a certificate records them in writing. The guide to editions and print runs goes into detail.

Art print or poster

A poster is printed in an undeclared quantity and is not signed: it can be reprinted at will. An art print states how many copies exist and who signed them. That is the difference that counts, even when the image is the same.
